Setting goals for yourself can be a tricky thing to do. Here are a few questions you need to ask yourself before you make your goals:
1. What season am I in? As you can see in this picture I took today I am about to have a baby. Being pregnant is just one of many things that directly effects what I can expect of myself in this season. The key with this question is to not COMPARE to other people. Some pregnant women can do more than I can, some less. That doesn’t matter- it’s about about me being aware of what I can do in this season. You must know what season this is for you and make a decision accordingly. A few questions you can ask yourself:
-Is this a season to push towards a new goal or just maintain what I am currently doing?
-Do I need to change my goals based on this season of life?
2. Is my goal realistic? Based on the answers to the questions above, is your goal realistic? For me, it’s not realistic for me to expect that I will be getting in as much cardio (or any exercise for that matter as I have been pretty tired just keeping up with my two boys) as I would be if I were not pregnant. But I can set realistic goals based on how my body is feeling. With this, I also evaluate my goals often. Life changes and you need to be open to mixing things up especially if you have responsibilities outside of yourself. A few questions you can ask yourself:
-If this is a goal that will be time consuming, do I have enough time in the week to make it happen? If not, where will I pull the time from?
-Is the goal for now? Later?
3. Is this something I actually want? Sometimes we can find ourselves inspired by others and without even knowing it we set goals for ourselves based on our admiration for them. This can be in fitness, business, education, parenting, etc. So the goal you are working on, is it something you really want? Now, I’m not talking about being lazy vs. working hard. Some goals are only achieved through hard work. An example for me would be that while I am be inspired by people who run triathlons, it will never be a goal of mine. At the end of the day I just don’t enjoy it. That’s okay. A few questions you can ask yourself are:
-Is this something I really want for MY life?
-Am I doing this because I want to or because I feel I should do it because that is what a ‘good’ _______ does? (Ex…a ‘good’ mom cooks from scratch, a ‘good’ woman makes time to exercise 6 days a week, etc.) There are things you may be doing only because you think you should be. Give yourself some grace to live the life YOU want!
Take a few minutes to evaluate your season of life, then set a realistic goal, make sure it’s something you really want, and then go for it! I’d love to hear what goal(s) you are working on right now!
