So I did something this weekend that I MUST share with you because I know that it’s going to set a few of you free like it did for me!
So you know the book that is mega popular right now, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up? Well, I haven’t read the book but I’ve read reviews (tips for busy moms- podcasts and reviews can teach us when we have NO time to read a full book!) so I got the jist of it. Basically, when organizing/cleaning out your stuff, ask if the item brings you JOY. If it does, find a home for it. If it no longer does, thank you it the purpose it served, and let it go. (There is much more to the book, that was just my 1st take-away!)
So, I finally went through my closet and got rid of clothes that I have LOVED, and still do actually, but that no longer bring joy to my post baby number three body.
Here’s the thing that health magazines don’t often mention, even when you get back to a healthy weight your body may not be the same as it was pre-kids.
I got rid of super cute clothes that I have loved, but even though I look AMAZING and am only 5 pounds more than before baby #3, all of the shirts I got rid of clung weird and made me feel fat.
Did you hear that? They made me feel fat. Which is NOT the truth. I look great. So if you have items in your closet that make you FEEL less than you should, get rid of them! Why keep that negativity in your life? We are hard enough on ourselves as women, we don’t need the added pressure of trying to fit into clothes that fit us in a different season of our lives. Seasons change!!! We need to embrace them and find confidence in each one.
For my birthday I went to my favorite store Express and bought a couple new shirts, and I got a few at Target as well. And they make me feel AMAZING! They make me feel like all my work is paying off. They make me feel like I should at 37 as a mom of 3 who is FIT and ALSO has cellulite. Who eats better now than she ever did in her 20’s, and yet still has some hip fat. You and I deserve to feel and look as amazing as we are, being a mom is like being a super human.
Same body. Same weight. Same day. But those old clothes were not making me feel like I should feel. The new shirts made me feel beautiful.
So. My challenge to you today, do you need to throw out some of those old clothes? While you may have loved them, are they no longer going to serve a purpose in this season of your life? If me working out 5-7x a week and eating as good as I have been wasn’t going to allow those clothes to fit me, there is NO way I’m going to punish my body just in order to fit into them. They needed to go. (And my friends in my moms group I lead at church will be ever so thankful for them!)
Maybe you have been waiting until you hit your goal weight to get new clothes. I get it, why waste the money. But I would challenge you just get 1-2 new shirts that help you feel great if nothing you have is fitting you. If you are 5-15 pounds from your goal weight then only you know if you are going to push to get those last pounds of before you get new clothes. If you are- then get to it so you don’t live in that limbo just knowing you ‘need’ to, and if you aren’t because this isnt’ the season to push for that goal or you realize you feel great at the weight you are at, then embrace where you are and make sure you have clothes that you feel good in.
I know that you may be thinking through the reality of the cost of replacing your clothes. I get it. But what is it costing you in confidence to not have clothes that make you feel amazing? Be smart! I mixed and matched so many coupons at Express that I got $201 worth of clothes for $68. Mom skills right there! (Target had really flattering and cost efficient shirts.) Rather than choosing a ton of so-so items, save up and get a few super flattering things you love! You will wear them more often anyway, and so need less to choose from.
There you have it! If you do this I’d love to hear about it! Talk to you next Monday!
