Right now as you start (or re-start) your journey I want to encourage you to just do what you already know to do. Don’t worry about the 50 different eating styles you could be doing. Don’t be paralyzed wondering if you burn 20-50 calories more or less in a workout than you actually are. Replace bad foods with better foods but don’t fear you won’t reach your goal if you mess up one meal. Know generally how many calories you need to eat/burn but depending on how much weight you have to lose but don’t get so caught up in that number that you lose focus on saying YES to just working out period!
This is a beginning, you don’t have to write the end of the story now- just say YES to starting. I’m not saying you won’t address the above mentioned issues in time, but for today just get into a routine and the weight-loss will come. In time you will make more changes.
I know this can be easier said than done but I want to remind you that we all have to start somewhere. I’ve been following a few people who are SO into clean eating and it though I aspire to keep cleaning up my eating habits it also left me just feeling like nothing I could do was good enough. Like if I wasn’t eating everything like them then it was a waste of time. Like the protein bar I had used to replace eating crackers or junk was now not even good enough. (And this was never because of pressure from them- they don’t even know I follow them! But this is an example of what we can do to ourselves in our pursuit of wanting to change.) Then I had to remind myself, and now also share with you, that it’s a process. Even saying that, process, seems so elementary but seriously there is so much information out there that we can want it all and get overwhelmed at where to start and what is good enough. I used to be a girl who ate ice cream for breakfast. To myself 5 years ago I wouldn’t believe how healthy I eat now. But it was eliminating/exchanging foods over the course of time that got me to where I am now.
The same goes for your workouts. Friends, I used to have to press pause doing TurboJam. I never would have dreamed that I could keep up with the girls in TurboFIRE. (For those who don’t know- FIRE is like Jam on steroids!) But that’s the beauty of it- you are competing with no one but YOU! Let others inspire you- but then daily you push yourself to do a little more than you think you can. One day you will look up and see that you have come further than you thought you could.
With eating and working out say YES to to the knowledge you already have, and then keep moving forward when you have the mental energy. Self-control/discipline is like a muscle and you need to train it like one. Build up the strength and stamina over time- don’t max it out so that in 2 weeks it’s totally fatigued.
There are pains that come with growing. There are big steps and little steps along the way, even a few bumps. But we keep going. I want to encourage you to keep going towards your goals. As you reach for your goals you bring everyone in the group to a new level as well- this is the beauty of having friends and mentors in our lives. Do not be discouraged by how far you have to go- but take one step at a time. Say YES to what you know you can do today!
Have you ever struggled with just getting started? Or struggled to keep it going without losing your mind? I would love to hear steps you have taken to get through those moments!
