It can be so hard to start working out after a break- whether it’s been 2 weeks or 6 months. Yesterday I was able to work out again after a 2 week break and it was so hard to make myself to it. I kept talking myself out of it, saying I could do it later. I considered making it my ‘off’ day instead of the one scheduled mid-week. SERIOUSLY??? Yes, I am totally telling the truth about what was going on in my mind.
So what did I do?
I got up off the couch, begrudgingly put my shoes on, pushed play and did the workout.
I talked back to the instructor probably the first 10 min of the video. Stuff like, “Yeah right, whatever, who cares,” and much more coming out of my mouth in response to her encouraging words. My bad attitude aside what matters is that I did it. I didn’t go all out crazy (frankly I couldn’t keep up) but I still managed to burn 500 calories in a 45 minute workout. And even more than the calorie burn, I got things started again.
My challenge to you today is to do it. Mind over matter.
Tell your body what to do, and also listen if your pushing too hard and relax a little. But we all know the difference between our bodies really saying ‘slow down’ and our minds saying ‘slow down it’s too hard’. They are two different beasts. Yesterday 95% of my struggle was mental.
Today it was easier. It really was. I knew how I felt yesterday after I did it. It gave me the push to do it today.
Has it been a few days for you since your last workout? Has it been a few months? Start today. Even if, like me, your attitude is horrible the whole way through. Just do it. Do it for your heart, energy levels, kids, spouse, and YOURSELF!
