When is the best time of day to exercise?
When you will actually do it!
Are there studies that recommend you exercise earlier in the day so you can burn a few extra calories throughout the day? Yes. But, I think we can spend so much time trying to figure out how to exercise or do it just right that we don’t ever do anything. If you can only exercise at 8pm every night- then do it!
I would love to get up at 5am and have my workout done, but the reality is I am a mess that early (I’ve tried it). I am uncoordinated and mentally not awake. My ideal time would be 8:30 or 9am. Practical with a family right? 🙂 It’s still early in the day so I can get ready for other commitments, but not so early that I feel like I’m still sleeping as I try and workout. But, usually I have to choose to get it done earlier or later in the day. Earlier and I am sleepy like I mentioned, later and I have kids needing attention which causes me to hit ‘pause’ on the DVD player several times before I am finished with my exercise.
Figure out what time works for you. If you are a mom to really young kids you will have a harder time figuring out a routine schedule. And, I want to remind you that sleep is really important for your health as well as exercise. So if you need to take nap time and sleep while your baby is sleeping, then do it. Some days you won’t need the extra sleep and then maybe you can use nap time to exercise. Be gracious to your body and make sure you have realistic expectations on your body as to what you will look like.
You may be thinking you have NO time to workout by the time your day is done. If that is the case then I think you may need to evaluate your family/life schedule and make sure you are as much of a priority as your kids, spouse and work are. How will your children know it’s okay to take time for themselves when they grow up if they are not seeing you do the same? How will your son know that his wife is going to need some ‘her’ time? This comes by you being the example. It’s okay for them to know that mom needs to take care of herself, and out of that she will be even more engaged in all life has to offer.
What is the biggest struggle for you in finding the time to exercise?
